Tips on leaving Dewi alone as a puppy

As a full time student I spend most of my time at home, which is why I was confident this was the best time to get a puppy, allowing me to keep an eye on him whilst he's learning new things. However  I work on the weekends and two days in the week therefore at some point Dewi was going to have to be left alone.

This led me to the internet to do a a bit of reading about leaving your puppy/dog at home. There's lots out there, and it's useful especially if your a first time dog owner and I suggest you definitely do a bit of research into the breed of dog you're getting. Some breeds are more likely to suffer from separation anxiety if left for long periods. Obviously every dog is different, however Dachshunds and Jack Russells are less likely to suffer from this, which is another reason I went for this breed.

In the first few days we got Dewi, I made sure that myself or my partner would be around all day whilst he was settling in. This is important to consider when you're getting a new puppy so they get used to their new home. It's also important to try to get a family/friend/neighbour on board before you your decide to get a new furry friend. I am lucky as my mum works in the little town I live in. So I got her a key cut, and on the two days I go to work, he's left for around 4 hours on his own until she can check on him in her lunch break. Perfect! He's so adorable so she was happy to come and see him!

On weekends I work on a chicken farm, this is no problem at all as I just take Dewi with me, and he loves it of course, getting lots of fuss off everyone! We're quite sociable people and go out and about a lot and I think it's also important to socialise Dewi so, within reason.. I take him everywhere with me! Pubs that allow dogs, friends houses, I even took him to watch a pantomime. So far he's behaved like an angel. Getting him used to being out and about means he will hopefully know how to behave as he gets older and as we go on more adventures! But for now... he's a sleepy sleepy boy and it's his bed time.
